Mazatlan's city general description
Mazatlan, known as “The Pacific Pearl” for the beauty of its beaches, its warm weather, its people and its natural riches, it’s one of the most important port in the Mexican Pacific.
Located in the South of Sinaloa, 2 meters 50 centimeters on the sea level.
Its name comes from the ancient nahuatl language and means “Place of Deer”. It was founded in the year of 1531 and has a rich history.
Mazatlan combines the traditional architecture of its historic center, known as the Old Mazatlan -where you can admire the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and walk around its beautiful streets with old constructions of the XIX century- with modern hotels and restaurants that form its spectacular Golden Zone (Zona Dorada), gifted with more than 10 km of beautiful beaches -as Playa Norte (North Beach), Playa Gaviotas (Seagull Beach), and Playa Venados (Deer Beach)- , ideal to practice surf, diving, and sport fishing of marlin and sailfish.
Economic activities.
Besides of the tourism, Mazatlan has other economic activities: fishing has been on the these main activities. Mazatlan concentrates the 70% of the fishing activity of the state: the production of tuna, shrimp and other marine species. This has favored a development in the port, because of their industrial process in Mazatlan exist 18 freezers. Mazatlan also has 3 bottling factories, more than 5 food products packers companies, a flour mill, 5 shipyards and industries that have standed out in several levels like Café El Marino (Coffee), Pacífico Brewery and the development of a solid shipbuilding industry.
All of which has made Mazatlan an active port, in such way, that Mazatlan does not depends on tourism to grow, making it more attractive as a place to live.

Cultural and Sporting events
Among the sporting events that have place in this port stand out: the Baseball Caribbean Series, the International Golf Tournament "Jesús Arnoldo Millán", the Bisbee Bill Fish Fishing Tournament, the Great International Tennis Tournament, the Pacífico Marathon, the International Week of the Motorcycle and the Annual Journey to the Deer Island.
In the case of the cultural event we can find: Mazatlan’s Cultural Festival, the Sinaloa of the Arts Festival, the Day of the Music, the Book Fair, as well as the International Carnival of Mazatlan, one of the most famous in the world, that is celebrated in the last days of February: for a whole week you will be able to dance in the streets to the rhythm of the “tambora”, while you look the joyful parade of allegorical cars, that passes through the main plazas and avenues.
Most of these events take place in the cultural heart of Mazatlan: Old Town Mazatlan, where the Angela Peralta Theater is located. This theater was built in the last century and where today you can appreciate countless national and international music, dancing, and theater plays.
Mazatlan's Beaches
With more than 20 km of shore line, Mazatlan offers the tourism beautiful easy access beaches. Amazing cliffs and exuberant vegetation stand out the beauty of these crystal water places. The diversity of the waves allows practicing different water activities such as swimming, parachute, surf, among others. Mazatlan and Sinaloa's Gastronomy
Mazatlan owns a wide variety of quality restaurants of Mexican food, fast food, Asian, Italian and international cuisine, as well as coffee houses where to find the most exquisite desserts. The best restaurants are located in the Golden Zone and in the Plazuela Machado. The specialty of the port is, without a doubt, the Seafood, and in this matter, the place does not define the quality: you can find delicious fresh seafood in wagons (“carretas”), just ask the locals.
Main tourist attractions
Mazatlan owns a 36 km Sea boardwalk, one of the longest worldwide. Nothing like enjoying a sunset sitting in one of its benches, or go running in the mornings like a lot of locals do.
Mazatlan has as well the World’s Tallest Natural Lighthouse, located in the top of the Crestón Hill, 2 km south of the port, next to the sport fishing fleet. Surrounded by 75% of sea, in it’s bottom you can watch mollusks and little fish, that when the tide rises are taken to little ponds that are form between the rocks.
Mazatlan's Lifestyle
Mazatlan has a lot of fine stores, a modern shopping mall (and another under construction) and an endless number of outdoor stores. A lot of the local stores have crafts famous in all México. You can find: art, custom made leather clothes, sport and beach clothes. One of the most extraordinary stores is the Seashell City Museum that presents lots of different kinf of shells and really particular sea products.
After tour by the boardwalk, a good “aguachile” dish and shop around the Golden Zone, comes the night out. And Mazatlan has something for every taste: from bohemian bars in Golden Zone and Old Town Mazatlan, to dancing and fun clubs of pop, reggaeton, mambo, salsa, cumbia and of course “Banda”, Mazatlan’s music.
Mazatlan has good hospitals, public security, schools and colleges recognized nationally. It has an international airport and excellent touristic infrastructure. All the amenities of a city mixed in perfection with a magical history, dream beaches, and warm nice people.
The life that is lived in Mazatlan is a quality life, and is because of this that many national and international persons had made of this port their second home. “The Pearl of the Pacific” has known how to adapt itself to the time changes without loosing the personality that characterizes it and that made the famous singer-writer Jose Alfredo Jimenez write in his song: “…the great pride of belonging to Mazatlan!”
